Background:

As the share of students in our nation’s public schools who are growing up in poverty continues to rise – along with associated rates of hunger, trauma, and homeless – and as schools serve a growing number of students from immigrant and refugee families, and children whose families do not speak English at home, we’ll need new strategies to meet those challenges.

The Every Student Succeeds Act provides states, school districts, and communities the opportunity to explore innovative ways to address these many challenges and share accountability for student progress toward college, career, and life readiness.

Community schools, like Cincinnati’s Oyler K-12 School featured in Oyler One School One Year documentary, exemplify the opportunity in ESSA. Oyler illustrates how educators and their community partners, facing tough odds, can work together to help young people succeed.

A panel will explore how community schools like Oyler effectively mitigate poverty-related impacts on teaching and learning, challenges to their implementation, and opportunities in ESSA to adopt this strategy and pursue sustainable school improvement efforts.
